Tomas Villanueva, DO, MBA, FACPE, SFHM
Tomas is a board-certified Internist with an extensive background in the acute, subacute and ambulatory arena. He has an extensive national presence in hospital medicine with the Society of Hospital Medicine in multiple areas pertaining to this field, where he was part of the inaugural class of Senior Fellows. While chief of hospital medicine at Baptist Health South Florida, Tom also started the system’s first palliative care program and Hospice GIP. He also has extensive experience in ambulatory and subacute acute care, prior to coming to Vizient.
Tom is the host of Vizient’s Hermes Platinum award-winning Modern Practice Podcast, a weekly series addressing issues affecting healthcare today for clinical leadership. He also serves as a clinical and executive lead for efforts with acute and ambulatory quality, length of stay reduction, mortality index reduction and the Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) score optimization. Tom’s additional responsibilities are in clinical operations with multiple member-facing projects which directly affect clinical efficiency and cost reduction. He has over 20 years of physician leadership experience and is a Fellow in the American Association for Physician Leadership and continues to practice general internal medicine.
Tom also presently serves as clinical assistant clinical professor of medicine at Nova Southeastern University, College of Osteopathic Medicine and Florida International University, College of Medicine.
He holds a doctor of osteopathic medicine with honors from Nova Southeastern University and a master of business administration, health administration and policy from the University of Miami. He is accredited by the American College of Physician Executives and is a Senior Fellow of the Society of Hospital Medicine.
