As healthcare organizations start and continue their journeys to becoming high reliability organizations, it's helpful to have a blueprint.

Vizient Executive Principals Allan Frankel and Michael Leonard created Safe and Reliable Healthcare to offer providers exactly that — a blueprint for their high reliability journey. In 2022, the company joined Vizient to expand its comprehensive solution to help healthcare organizations improve the consistency and quality of their care and reduce incidences of harm.

Based on the core foundation set by The Framework for High Reliability Healthcare, Vizient Safe and Reliable Healthcare offers high reliability consulting; safety, resiliency and burnout data collected from the SCORE culture and engagement survey; LENS, a virtual management board to help increase transparency, simplify communication and grow community; professional development programs; and other insights to transform and empower hospital leaders and frontline teams one work setting at a time.

"It's abundantly clear that the care patients receive is determined by the care the caregivers get from the organizations that employ them," Frankel said. "If healthcare organizations have a positive working culture and are effective in doing what they need to do, then the people on the frontlines find joy in their work and go home at the end of the day saying, `I feel good about myself because of what I did today.' In turn, the patients get better care."

In a recent interview with Healthcare Innovation at the HIMSS Conference in Chicago, Frankel discussed this and more, elaborating on what high reliability is and how Vizient can help accelerate a high reliability transformation.
