More Than 1,050 Facilities Now Leveraging Vizient Clinical Data Base to Improve Performance

Data & Analytics
August 24, 2022

What started in the 1980s as a way for a group of academic medical centers to share outcomes data and best practices and to identify top performers in patient care has grown to become the nation’s definitive analytics platform for hospital performance and improvement. The Vizient® Clinical Data Base (CDB) welcomes more than 1,050 hospital facilities leveraging the platform’s outcomes data to benchmark against peers to reduce variation and identify and sustain performance improvements.

Facilities participating in the CDB can review hundreds of comparative metrics — including mortality, length of stay, complication and readmission rates, hospital-acquired conditions and both normalized and non-normalized cost metrics — to benchmark against peers; identify, accelerate and sustain improvements; reduce unnecessary variation; and expedite data collection to fulfill external reporting requirements. The platform provides hospitals with clinical benchmarking tools such as dashboards, simulation calculators and templated and customizable reports to quickly identify improvement opportunities and their potential impact.

As the number of CDB participants grows, so does the collective value of that data to them. And through participants generously collaborating and sharing best practices, a true community of users across the nation has been developed.

CDB evolution brings powerful tools

As the platform has evolved over the decades, powerful tools have been added to ensure participating hospitals can continue to leverage the data to improve patient care and reduce unnecessary variation and costs. These include:

  • Dashboard Builder — harnessing the power of robust comparative CDB data in a guided analytic pathway to drill into opportunities for improvement across quality and cost outcomes with sophisticated visualizations that can be shared across users

  • Provider Insight — a customizable workflow tool that enables end-users to create provider specific reports needed to meet accreditation standards around Ongoing and Focused Professional Practice Evaluation.

  • Advice and peer support — with expert guidance from advisers who can help analyze data and apply lessons learned from Vizient’s performance improvement collaboratives as well as the opportunity to participate in up to three Vizient performance improvement collaboratives annually to learn best practices from peers and accelerate initiatives. Participants can also connect directly with other participating facilities electronically or though group activities.

The CDB provides full transparency to view the performance of individual hospitals by name, allowing participating facilities to choose which hospital(s) to benchmark against to fully understand your performance and identify ways to improve. At the same time, the tool allows hospitals to clearly see the risk-adjusted methodologies that are driving the benchmarking data, providing confidence that the data is more transparent and trustworthy than any other source.

Fueling continued functionality

In addition to the growth of the CDB community, our Clinical Analytics portfolio is also growing to provide even greater value to our members.

From the recent addition of Clinician Decision Analytics that provides variation insights by tying interventions to outcomes, the patent-pending Vizient Vulnerability IndexTM which addresses health equity and social determinants of health, the Vizient Data Connector that automates data extraction from electronic health records, and the Application Program Interface (API), Vizient is ensuring that hospitals will continue to have access to the insights, data and support needed to improve patient care and remain viable in their markets.
