Unifying disparate data under a single dashboard

System leaders at Novant Health needed to align data across their system’s 15 medical centers using the Vizient® Clinical Data Base (CDB).

After implementing the CDB, system leaders could better assess the performance of individual facilities and compare themselves against peer hospitals. With these insights, leaders could standardize the onboarding process and better plan for quality improvement initiatives systemwide.

Insights that drive local ownership to reach improvement goals

Using the CDB platform’s peer-to-peer comparison tools led to discovering improvement opportunities to reduce patient mortality and hypoglycemic events. Clinical leaders reviewed current protocols and created documentation that drove improvements to care quality.

Visualize performance with the Quality & Accountability scorecard

To help measure the individual perform of its facilities year over year, system leaders used the Vizient Quality & Accountability (Q&A) scorecard to rank themselves on a quarterly basis against peer facilities. Novant Health’s clinical data team used this data to create leading indicators and a month-to-month visual analysis to making day to day decisions. Each week, a team of clinical support executives reviews the CDB dashboard to identify barriers to providing better care and set priorities for each facility, as well as works with systems teams to prioritize systemwide problems areas, such as sepsis, length of stay and congestive heart failure. Read the whitepaper to see common traits among top performers in the Q&A scorecard.

Improving your hospital profile with national quality scorecards

High reliability is mostly thought of in terms of quality and safety, although operational, financial outcomes and experiences must also be reliable. The imperative to have dependable, reliable performance increases as organizations assume more financial risk. Read the blog to learn more.

Accountability and ownership to improvement goals

In late 2021, The Leapfrog Group assigned straight A’s to all 15 Novant Health medical centers after having only nine with top scores in 2020 thanks to the integration of data into strategic goals and weekly meetings.

Even though we’re part of a system, it has to be owned at the local level. Once those leaders are involved, we have that structure put in so that data
flows to and from that local leadership team. That’s where that accountability sets in.

Applying process enhancements to newly acquired facilities

Novant Health plans to continue on process enhancement journey by applying lessons learned to its newest acquisition, Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center. The visualization data work done by Novant Health was one of the main things that attracted New Hanover Regional Medical Center to the health system.
